WH Smith | Ireland & UK | 2010

WHSmith marks its place in Ireland.

WHSmith is one of the UK's leading retail groups, with a history that dates back to 1792. It trusted Flynn to capture its traditions as it opened several new stores in Dublin, Shannon and Belfast.

We began work in 2010, successfully rolling out three stores in Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport. This was the first indirect retail project completed in the new terminal building within the confines of a live construction site.

The next rollout was in Arnotts on Dublin’s Henry Street, Dublin. We had to meet a tight deadline and work within restricted hours, but our team’s diligence ensured that we successfully delivered the new unit within the timeframe allowed.

At Shannon Airport, the store was a combination of two retail units. The project was carried out on a design and build basis, and we delivered it within the strict security parameters of an airside environment.

We then moved operations to Northern Ireland and to Belfast’s Great Victoria Street Station. This project was a single unit retail fit-out for a property owned by Translink, Northern Ireland's public transport authority. We managed and delivered the fit-out to the timetable and standards set out by the landlord.

Our final project took us back to Dublin Airport, this time to Terminal 1. Upon its completion, WHS became the sole retailer of news agency products within the airport.

THE OUTCOME

WH Smith is known for its heritage and high-quality products, and the five projects we completed reflect that. Its foray into Ireland has been decidedly successful. In 2017, profits in the Republic more than doubled, buoyed by an increase in tourist numbers.
